To raise awareness of recycling and the harm that litter has on the environment the West Berkshire Green Party team took to the streets this weekend dressed in their most ghoulish Halloween fancy dress: With plastic witches, a skeleton on a bike, green goblins, a headteacher and a miniature batman. Rubbish was collected into a giant witches’ cauldron suspended from the big green battle bike.

The Big Green Halloween litter pick took place on Saturday 29th of October, with members dressing in Halloween themed fancy dress costumes and collecting rubbish from around Newbury and Victoria Park.

Did you know?

  • The average UK household currently recycles less than 45% of its waste, yet even conservative estimates suggest that 60% could be recycled.
  • It costs more than £500,000 per year to keep Britain’s streets clean (and the figure is even higher when parks and public spaces are included).
  • The amount of litter dropped in the UK has increased by 500% since the 60s.

In total 5.5 kg of rubbish was collected in the afternoon, with 55% of it being sent for recycling and the remainder sent to landfill. Among the more unusual items found were:

  • A golf ball.
  • Full bottles of beer.
  • An unopened can of Chilli Con Carne.

David Marsh of the West Berkshire Green Party said, “The Big Green Halloween litter pick on Saturday was scarily successful.

“We will be doing regular litter picks to support the good work done by council cleaners and to encourage West Berkshire to do more recycling.

“This will include rural areas, where we are seeing an increase in fly-tipping as a result of the council’s permit scheme.”
